This paper presents a general puzzle about evidence and delusion; delusions seem to be responsive to evidence in some context (e.g. the Capgras delusion is responsive to the abnormal experience of familiar faces) but not in others (e.g. the Capgras delusions is unresponsive to a doctor’s declaration that the woman is his real wife), and it is not easy to explain these two features in a coherent model. A model that nicely explains the former feature has difficulty in explaining the latter feature. A model that nicely explains the latter feature has difficulty in explaining the former feature. I argue that existing models of delusion formation, including the two-factor theory and the prediction-error theory, do not provide us with a fully satisfactory solution of the puzzle. I propose a possible solution of the puzzle, which is to distinguish two forms of evidence, non-social evidence and social-evidence, and to hypothesise that clinical delusions respond to social evidence (testimony, in particular) in a distinctive manner.
